Welcome to the Star City Astronomy Network

The Star City Astronomy Network (SCAN) is a group of astronomy enthusiasts that actually spend time observing the night sky. There are no "armchair astronomers" here. A requirement of being in this group is being active in observational astronomy and astronomy outreach.

SCAN does not have meetings. We meet when we observe.

SCAN Outreach Events in 2009 - 16 Events      SCAN Outreach Events in 2010 - 11 Events (So Far)
Outreach with a large Church Camp

SCAN had several outreach events with a church group at a large summer camp. Spread out over 4 different days, these outreaches introduced astronomy and the beautiful views through telescopes to a wide range of youth. These young people were a pleasure to meet and talk with, and we enjoyed the opportunity to spend time with them.
Outreach with the Student Conservation Association

SCAN had an outreach event with the Student Conservation Association. These young men and woman have dedicated their summers, and some several years, to working to clean and clear our natural trails. The attendees were from Missouri, California, New York, Georgia, and other states. We had a great time showing the stars to this fine group.
Six Outreach Events in July 2010 SCAN has six outreach events scheduled for the month of July 2010. All six of the events are private outreach events that SCAN is participating at the request of the private groups. We still plan to be at our monthly public outreach events if the skies cooperate. The total attendance for these events should be close to 2000 participants.
This Year, Another Great Benefit of SCAN Membership SCAN has had the pleasure of working with many great groups this year in pursuit of the SCAN goal of Astronomy Outreach. As a result of donations from these groups, all SCAN members have had their dues for the 2010-2011 year paid for by SCAN. No dues for SCAN members this year if you were a member last year.    Congratulations SCAN Members!!!
SCAN and the Roanoke Valley Master Naturalists

SCAN enjoyed working with the Roanoke Valley Master Naturalists on Saturday, April 10, 2010. The night was clear, and the attending SCAN members thoroughly enjoyed working with this group.
SCAN and the Girl Scouts SCAN had the pleasure of working with the Girl Scouts on an Astronomy Event on Friday, February 19, 2010. This is a very successful event, and we are looking forward to working with the Girl Scouts in the future.
